Can you pick up package from USPS post office before it is sent out on the postal truck for delivery?

Will the USPS post office allow me to pick up package from post office on the day it is supposed to be delivered. I am planning to be out of town by the time the mail is delivered to my house and would like to pick up the parcel directly.
