How to Pack for a Cruise

Find out the basics of how-to pack for a cruise.
by Updated January 29, 2009

No matter where you are going and how you are travelling it is always important to ensure that you pack the right things to take along with you. So, if you are planning to try a cruise for your next vacation, it is well worth taking the time to make a list of everything you need to pack, taking into account any special considerations. There are a number of pointers to remember when you are going on a cruise, and here are a few tips that will help to ensure that you have everything you need to make the most of your cruise.

Packing the right clothing. Firstly, no matter where you are cruising, it is important to remember that you are at sea, and therefore it will get a little breezy or even chilly, particularly in the evenings. Make sure that you pack some warmer clothing, such as a sweater or jacket to pop on if it does get chilly. Also, some areas of cruise liners have a dress code, so it is well worth packing some smart attire so that you can enjoy an elegant dining experience should you wish to. Of course, make sure that you pack plenty of lighter weight clothing too, especially if you are cruising around warmer climates.

Also pack some comfortable shoes, as you dont want to be exploring the cruise ship sporting footwear that is practically crippling you. However, remember the smarter footwear too for that special evening or dining experience on board. It is well worth finding out whether the cruise will be putting on special formal events so that you are more informed on what to take in terms of smart and formal clothing. However, remember that many cruise ships will enable you to hire such clothing on board too, so if you are pushed for packing space you can find out more about the cost and possibility of hiring your attire on board.

Dont forget that cruise ships also offer a range of leisure facilities, so if you want to stay active you can also pack your fitness clothing and swimwear. Of course you dont want to end up taking your whole wardrobe along with you on your cruise, so don't go over the top when it comes to packing.  Cruise ships also offer laundry services so you will be able to wash your items whilst you are away.

Other items to pack. In addition to clothing, it is important to remember the other essentials, as you would for any type of vacation. This includes items such as medications, sun block or sunscreen, sunglasses, and documentation required for your vacation. And dont forget the little things such as a camera to capture memories of your wonderful vacation, as well as your currency and credit cards.

By thinking carefully about what you need to take based upon your destination and also based upon the facilities and events offered on board the cruise liner, you can make the most of your experience and enjoy a really satisfying and memorable vacation.
