Why do you need to prime wood before painting?

What is the purpose of using a primer on wood, before using a finish paint?

Yes, you should always try to put layer of primer on bare wood before painting. This will allow the finished paint to go on smoother, when painted over the top of primer, and not soak into the wood. It's cheaper to use a base coat of primer, then to have to do multiple coats with expensive finishing paint.
