Are German Shepherds dangerous?

Do German Shepherds present a grave danger to human beings? How dangerous are they?

While the German Shepherd may not have the same reputation that golden retrievers or Dalmatians do, it is difficult to make a general assumption about it given that there are thousands of German Shepherds that have never hurt a human being.

One telling factor of how a dog will behave is the temperament of its parents and the training or treatment it was given while it was growing up. Obviously, a dog that has experienced abuse or maltreatment can be expected to have a violent or aggressive nature.
