Can I pick up my cat by the scruff of its neck?

Is it safe to pick up my cat by the scruff of its neck? Will it harm my cat in any way?

While it is harmless for the mothers of kittens to pick up their cats by the scruff of their necks, it is quite dangerous for people to do so as if the buttocks are not supported while doing so, you risk damaging the cat’s neck muscles or tendons. It is best to hold the cat properly by using both hands and supporting it throughout its body.
