Why do Cats like catnip?

What is it about catnip that makes it irresistible to cats?

Catnip is actually an herb that belongs to the mint family. The moment its leaves are torn, a certain chemical called nepetalactone is released. This is what draws cats to catnip. The same organ that is responsible for operating a cat’s five senses (sight, smell, touch, sound and taste) is what causes cats to react this way towards catnip.
